Enamel working

Enamel work benefifing from original Iranian and Islamic civilization ; with thousands of years history ; is one of the most beautiful and original handicrafts of Iran.   Although there are no evident documents about the background of this art but ; what have been found in old monuments and by analysis of archeologists it was revaled that the art of enamel work on metals has been atraditional artifact of Iranians.

During the Islamic period ; especially the seljukian age ; this art has been prevailing since the existence of Iranian enamel work ; like receptacles in some important museums of the world . Blossoming of this art during the Safavid era and especially Esfahan is very obvious.

This art is also called "Miniature on fire" ; to decorate some metals such as: gold ; silver and copper covered with heavenly colors. Enamel glaze is a lucid material which is composed of turquoise ; lapis lazuli ; kaolin etc. In order to prepare an enamel work ; selected copper receptacles are covered with a white colored glaze befor being baked and put into a furnace with a temperature of about "800C" for a few minutes . The baked copper receptacles are again taken into the furnace for the second time ; after this stage receptacles are ready to be painted ; thus with his artistic talent ; enamel worker expresses his imagination on the receptacle through designing.

This stage in enamel work is named the stage for seven colors. In this art ; also like tilework ; bule is the dominant color and the magic brush of the artist  configures the  faces of creatures ; arabesque designs or figures of monuments on copper receptacles and it is a reminder of the "turquoise" blue domes of Esfahan after painting ; the enamel work is again put into the furnace ; but with a lower temperature than the previon times (about 600C) in order to fix the colors and be favorable.

Undoubtedly ; for the present ; Esfahan is considered as the most important center for the production  of the highest quality enamels in different sizes and shapes in the world.
